Bessyboot is the top Wainwright chose for Rosthwaite Fell, though the fell's highest point is Rosthwaite Cam, a rocky top further along the marshy, knobbly ridge towards Glaramara. In the dip between the two lies the little pool of Tarn at Leaves. The fell's craggy volcanic rocks are a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and some volcanic rock types were first recognised here. Rosthwaite is from Old Norse, thought to mean the clearing with a heap of stones.
