Scafell's summit is a cairn on a short rocky ridge, just north of a stone windshelter, with the slightly lower north top, Symonds Knott, close by. On its north side the mountain drops in the huge cliffs of Scafell Crag, cut off from Scafell Pike by the narrow col of Mickledore. In August 1802 the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge climbed down Broad Stand, the slabby rock steps between the summit and Mickledore, often called the first recorded recreational rock climb.
