Great End is the northern bastion of the Scafell range, ending in cliffs that rise about 180 m above the path to Esk Hause. Its north-east face is split by gullies such as Central Gully and Cust's Gully, which face away from the sun and often hold snow into spring, and climbers have been tackling them in winter since at least 1880. The rocky top has two cairns of almost equal height, and the view north down Borrowdale is one of the finest in the Lakes.
