The Nab is a broad, grassy ridge end above Martindale, topped by a small cairn and riddled with peat hags, a few of them taller than a walker. It sits inside the Martindale deer forest, home to red deer that may be England's last pure-bred herd, and in the 1950s Wainwright treated it as strictly out of bounds. It's open access land now, but walkers are asked to keep away during calving from May to mid-June. Looking north, you see the whole Helvellyn range lined up end to end.
