The true top of Wansfell is Baystones, a grassy hump with a cairn, though many walkers stop at Wansfell Pike, the lower, rockier top to the south-west, linked to it by a stone wall and looking down Windermere. The name is thought to come from Old Norse and mean 'Woden's fell', after the chief Norse god.
