Higher Shelf Stones is a southern outlier of the Bleaklow plateau, where a trig point sits among weathered gritstone boulders. On 3 November 1948 a US Air Force RB-29 Superfortress, nicknamed Over Exposed, flew into the moor just below the top in low cloud, killing all 13 men on board. Much of the wreckage still lies scattered across the peat, and a memorial was put up at the crash site in 1988.
