Helm Crag's rocky skyline above Grasmere has earned it nicknames. The southern outcrop is the Lion and the Lamb, while the true summit, a tilted rock tower at the north-west end, is called the Howitzer, though from Mill Gill people say it looks like an old lady at an organ. Reaching its very top needs an awkward scramble, and the summit ground is two short parallel rocky ridges with a hollow between.
