Steel Fell rises above Dunmail Raise, and its highest point, Dead Pike, has a cairn of reddish stone. Above its steep faces is a small plateau scattered with tarns. The fell sits on Lakeland's main watershed: rain falling on one side ends up in Morecambe Bay, while a few metres away it runs north to the Derwent. The best view is north to Blencathra over Thirlmere.
