Skiddaw's long, stony summit ridge carries four tops, each with a cairn, and the highest, High Man, has a trig point and stone windshelters. The name is usually traced to Old Norse and is thought to mean 'the hill with the jutting crag'. On exceptionally clear days the view reaches the Isle of Man, the Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland and Goat Fell on Arran.
