Rannerdale Knotts is a short ridge of rocky knolls ending in crag and scree above Crummock Water. The valley behind it fills with bluebells in April and May, and local tales say they grew from the blood of Normans killed in a battle here, a story that comes from Nicholas Size's 1930 novel The Secret Valley. From the cairned top, Buttermere backed by Great Gable makes a fine view.
