Stybarrow Dodd is probably named 'hill of the steep path', after Sticks Pass, the old bridleway that crosses the ridge just to its south, once marked by wooden stakes that were still standing in 1928. The summit is a smooth grassy dome with a cairn, and the highest ground is a few metres from it; streams off the east side flow to Ullswater, and off the west to Thirlmere.
