Harter Fell stands at the head of Haweswater, above the drowned village of Mardale Green, and from the rim of its northern crags you can see the whole length of the reservoir. The summit cairn is dressed with twisted ironwork from the old fence, some of it sticking up like pitchforks. Two old trade routes, Nan Bield Pass and Gatescarth Pass, still zig-zag up on either side, and the corrie tarn of Small Water lies below the crags.
