Dove Crag's top was once an unnamed bump on the Fairfield horseshoe, and over time it simply took the name of the big crag on its eastern side. A cairn sits on a little rocky platform at the top, with a drystone wall running just to the west. Below the crag is Priest's Hole, a shallow cave with a wall built across its mouth where walkers still spend the night, and this was the fell Wainwright wrote up first, in November 1952.
